District Distinct #87 - Mid Year Goals Check-in

2024 midpoint goal check-in

Maybe it's because I'm cruising onto the back nine of life, but in recent years I have gained a far greater appreciation for the fast passage of time. Always less of it, gone too fast, but if we're lucky we learn to enjoy it more.

Case in point: 2024, which we are roughly halfway done with.

An apt time (after hyperventilating) to review goals set at the beginning of the year and maximize your best intentions for the back nine of 2024.

Below is a set of questions I'm using to review my own progress and shape how I improve upon those gains.

First, though, a disclaimer: go easy on yourself. This isn't an excuse to beat yourself up, but rather an opportunity to refocus and reprioritize.

  1. Have any of your goals changed? If so, why and what are you prioritizing differently now?
  2. What circumstances this year have impeded progress toward your goals?
  3. What habits or behaviors have slowed you down or gotten in the way at times?
  4. What changes can you make (now) that would give you more leverage in achieving your goals?
  5. How can you create more momentum (and compounding gains) for the things that are working well?

Coaching Guinea Pigs

Sharing a link to a recent LinkedIn post I sent (and by recent, I mean the only one I've sent in years...although that might be changing now). I'm looking for coaching guinea pigs for a credential I'm pursuing. I received some great responses already and probably have my allotment booked, but I did want to share here in case there's anyone you know who might resonate with the ask. I was pleasantly surprised with who came out of the proverbial LinkedIn woodwork so far and really excited to try and help some great people work on some important things.

  1. Old-timey organ-grinders try to keep pace with modern Mexico City (The Christian Science Monitor): The soundscape of Mexico City is unlike anywhere else in the world. Here's the fascinating cultural backstory behind one of those sounds, which also has its own union. The story offers a window into the lives of Mexico's informal labor force seen through the lens of a ubiquitous touristy cultural institution.
  2. What Hunter Biden tells us about America (Edward Luce, FT): It says a lot about the health and motivations of the two major US political parties, which I suppose tells you what you need to know about the US right now. The opening and closing lines of this essay are excellent: It is the universe's little joke that America's first trial of the child of a sitting president began four days after its first conviction of a former president / And the kicker: One of America's potential presidents respects the rule of law. The other does not. Everything else pales in comparison.

The High Return Activity of Raising Others' Ambitions This is the title of a Tyler Cowen blog post that I've thought about a lot recently. It applies to coaching, but I also think it has broader relevance to our day-to-day lives and encounters. Here's the salient paragraph from Cowen: At critical moments in time, you can raise the aspirations of other people significantly, especially when they are relatively young, simply by suggesting they do something better or more ambitious than what they...

Ayr Mount, Hillsborough, NC Annual Review & Goal Setting Templates Each year I put together an annual review and goal setting process to help draw perspective from the prior year and frame how I want to focus my time and effort in the new year. For me, this year is about finishing the reader manuscript for my novel, growing my coaching business, building and strengthening community in North Carolina, and continuing to chisel away at my exceptional physique. I'm also putting a premium on...

Favorite Books of 2024 When the clock strikes midnight on 2024 I'll have come damn close to accomplishing a goal of reading 50 books. Of those books, below were the ones that left the biggest impression. Listed in no particular order, except for the first one. James by Percival Everett was far and away my favorite of the year. Not a bold choice since according to LitHub it was on more 'best of 2024' lists than any other book. Everett is brilliant and so is this captivating and funny twist on...
